Abstract

"The distinction between domestic and wild reindeer is important, but obviously they belong to the same subspecies: Rangifer tarandus tarandus, the mountain reindeer. This paper concentrates on wild reindeer as a common property resource and how problems connected to this resource have lead to a reinventing of the commons. This is exemplified by the Rondane region and regional planning.

"According to Berks and Taghi Farvar (1989) understanding of common property resources has to distinguish between the resource itself and the property-rights regime under which it is held. This is also the point of departure of my paper and I will start by characterizing wild reindeer and their adaption to the environment and the property rights regime they depend upon."
