Abstract: "This paper explores theoretical and methodological issues related to doing research on marine tenure practices among the people of Sangihe islands. Recent research, conducted by members of the Centre for Social and Cultural Studies, focuses on systemic differences between marine tenure practices and degree of political and market integration within the region. Strikingly different ecological and political situations in isolated Para Island and Saluran Island, a historically important cultural and economic center, may offer a point of departure for comparison."
