Abstract: "Many of the South Indian tanks are starting their second hundred years in a sad state of disrepair. Although tanks are found in all parts of India, they account for over 30 percent of the total irrigated area in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu States of South India. There are about 39,200 tanks in Tamil Nadu State alone. However, until recently, tank irrication has not been considered as an important sources of irrigation. The major emphasis since 1950-51 has been on groundwater development and large scale irrigation projects."
