Abstract: "In northern Nigeria dry season vegetable cultivation has been practised for generations in the fadamas or seasonally wet bottom lands (Carter et al, 1983). These fadamas range from localised depressions to major river flood plains. Water is lifted from perennial rivers, water holes and wells by the locally constructed counterpoised device known as the shaduf."
