Abstract: "Artisanal fisheries have been playing an increasing role in the food and livelihood security of a large majority of the world's population. However, increasing pressure on resource from industrialized and artisanal fishing fleets, the use of over-efficient and destructive fishing technologies, degradation of the coastal environment and lack of adequate management and regulatory measures threaten the survival of the artisanal fisheries around the world. In India, artisanal fisheries provide livelihood to communities of several hundred thousand fishers and their families. Considering that these communities are among the most deprived communities in the region, and the fact that they enjoy very little occupational mobility, it is important to ensure that their spaces be preserved."
