Abstract:	"Water was one of five priority issues at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg. It is recognised increasingly as an essential component in the dynamics of poverty; poor water management can indeed create and perpetuate poverty. Not only is secured access to water essential for poverty alleviation, but water development is closely linked to food production and hunger alleviation, and to energy development."
