Abstract: "Based on current research on Vella Lavella Island, Solomon Islands, the paper examines the ways in which external forces differently alter common property relations in three economically contrasting villages. In particular, it examines the ways in which social meanings of resources and property are transformed. As transformation proceeds, conflicting ideologies of property and 'ownership' between communities and ideological contradictions within communities emerge. The paper investigates the intensification of these conflicts and contradictions as Vella Lavellans attempt to construct a locally-initiated, island-wide plan to sustainably and equitably manage their terrestrial and marine resources."
