Journal Article Faunal Activities and Soil Processes: Adaptive Strategies that Determine Ecosystem Function(1997) Lavelle, P."This paper aims first at linking these diverse approaches into a general conceptual model of the relationships between soil invertebrates and the other animate and inanimate components of the soil system. A functional classification of soil organisms based on their adaptive strategies is then attempted. Three large functional groups (guilds) of soil invertebrates are defined and their effects on soil organic matter dynamics, nutrient cycling and the soil physical structure are detailed."Book Chapter Impact of Soil Fauna on the Properties of Soils in the Humid Tropics(Soil Science Society of America, 1992) Lavelle, P.; Blanchart, E.; Martin, A.; Spain, A.V.; Martin, S."The sustainability of soil fertility in agricultural systems of the humid tropics has recently become a major issue as a consequence of continued land degradation and the critical need to provide more food. For socioeconomic, pedological, and ecological reasons, the development of sustainable high-input agriculture has proven to be slow and difficult and much effort needs to be directed towards the improvement of productivity in low-input agriculture."
