Working Paper Effects of War and Displacement on Local Seed Systems in Northern Sierra Leone(1997) Longley, Catherine"This article examines the impact of war and displacement on the seed systems of resource poor semi-subsistence farmers in north western Sierra Leone. Rice is the staple food crop grown by farmers in this region. It is cultivated both in upland, rain-fed areas and in inland valley swamps. This paper focuses on upland rice."Working Paper Livelihoods, Chronic Conflict and Humanitarian Response: A Review of Current Approaches(2003) Longley, Catherine; Maxwell, Daniel"A large part of the populations of several countries 'including the more remote and agriculturally difficult areas' live in situations of chronic conflict or political instability. Livelihoods interventions in these situations must have the ability to incorporate both relief and development modes of operation; what might normally be regarded as life-saving humanitarian assistance can be programmed to provide livelihood support. A balance must be struck which respects humanitarian principles, and yet adapts sufficiently to local conditions through adequate participation and flexibility. There remains considerable debate as to whether livelihoods approaches in chronic conflict situations are compatible with humanitarian principles, particularly independence, neutrality and impartiality."Working Paper Participatory Methodologies and Participatory Practices: Assessing PRA Use in the Gambia(2002) Brown, David; Howes, Mick; Hussein, Karim; Longley, Catherine; Swindell, Ken"This research examines the conduct and consequences of the use of participatory rural appraisal techniques in four rural development projects in The Gambia. The research included a review of literature on PRA and the identification of a series of key themes that would allow an assessment of its utility. Fieldwork in The Gambia included reviews of project documentation, key informant interviews, and periods of village-based research using PRA methods. The conclusions of the study were presented and discussed in a national workshop."Working Paper Rural Recovery in Fragile States: Agricultural Support in Countries Emerging from Conflict(2007) Longley, Catherine; Christoplos, Ian; Slaymaker, Tom; Meseka, Silvestro"Despite on-going debates surrounding the usefulness of the term fragile states there is general consensus that donors and aid actors must engage more effectively in such countries. This paper examines the question of how international aid actors might support the agricultural component of rural livelihoods in fragile states that are emerging from conflict."
