The Management, Production and Rehabilitation in South Indian Irrigation Tanks
    (1983) Easter, K. William; Palanisami, K.
"Many of the South Indian tanks are starting their second hundred years in a sad state of disrepair. Although tanks are found in all parts of India, they account for over 30 percent of the total irrigated area in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu States of South India. There are about 39,200 tanks in Tamil Nadu State alone. However, until recently, tank irrication has not been considered as an important sources of irrigation. The major emphasis since 1950-51 has been on groundwater development and large scale irrigation projects."

    (1983) Palanisami, K.; Easter, K. William
"Irrigation development in India continues to be given a high priority, with full irrigation potential- estimated at about 58 million hectares in 1979-80. This amounts to about 51 percent of the total area of 113.5 million hectares that could be irrigated. Total investment in irrigation from the beginning of the planning era in 1951 to 1978 amounted to approximately 93 billion rupees on major, medium and minor projects. Minor irrigation has contributed over half of the growth in total irrigation potential."
