Book Caring, Empathy, and the Commons: A Relational Theory of Collective Action(Cambridge University Press, 2023) Lejano, Raul; Lejano, Raul"People are not autonomous individuals but connected beings. Curae ergo sum – we care, therefore we are. Relationality – which refers to the ethic and manner by which relational considerations govern decisions and institutional arrangements can take advantage of the power of connection – uncovers how social connection, across divides, moves people to act for the other. Drawing from research on empathy, social networks, and determinants of pro-social behavior, Caring, Empathy, and the Commons builds on Ostrom’s Governing the Commons. It offers a different mechanism by which collective action is induced, arguing that, sometimes, the individual thinks not in terms of individual gain but in terms of the other. Developing this concept of relationality, this book explores various strands of literature and examines how this idea might be used to foster collective action around climate, species protection, fair trade, and other dilemmas of the commons."Book Critical Essays on the Enclosure of the Cultural Commons: The Conceptual Foundations of Today's Mis-Education(Ecojustice Press, 2007) Bowers, Chet A."Humans have been sustained by the cultural and environmental commons from the time of their first appearance on the vast savannas of what we now call Africa. The environment provided the source of food and fiber, wood for fire and shelter, and water. From the earliest times, there were norms that governed the nature of the family unit, the roles of men and women in performing various activities and ceremonies, what actions would be punished, status systems that regulated group decision-making, how the success of the hunt and later the harvest would be shared, how the dead were to be dealt with, and how young were mentored in the performance of various tasks. While the environment that was necessary for sustaining life was not referred to as the environmental commons, and while the cultural beliefs and norms that governed behavior and even led to various expressions of aesthetic judgment and performance were not referred to as the cultural commons, it is important that we make these two phrases a more central part of our thinking."Book The Future of the Commons: Beyond Market Failure and Government Regulation(Institute of Economic Affairs, 2012) Ostrom, Elinor; Chang, Christina; Pennington, Mark; Tarko, Vlad"Traditional economic models of how to manage environmental problems relating to renewable natural resources, such as fisheries, have tended to recommend either government regulation or privatisation and the explicit definition of property rights. These traditional models ignore the practical reality of natural resource management. In Route with the Commons: Archive and Memory of a Possible Constellation (2017-18-19)(La Vorágine, 2020) Álvarez-Blanco, Palmar"This book is a guide and a road map corresponding to three years, 2017, 2018, and 2019, behind which lies time spent traveling and doing interviews throughout different cities in Spain. The raw materials of the entire process of investigation can be used as a research tool, as a textbook in classrooms, or as a consulting manual for communities. The book has been catalogued within the library network. The collection of the 45 conversations transcribed allows us to understand the culture of the commons, with its anti-capitalist orientation and aspiration, accompanied by people who belong to these communities. Their testimonies can be found in audiovisual form in the bilingual digital archive 'The Constellation of the Commons / La Constelación de los Comunes.' You can access the digital tool using this link, and all the content is offered under the Creative Commons: https://constelaciondeloscomunes.org/ "Book The Little Book of the Commons(KYSQ Press, 2022) Zetland, David"The Commons are as widely misunderstood and overlooked as they are widespread and critical in sustaining and enriching our lives. They come from nature, but humans can also create them. They are open for all to enjoy but often suffer from abuse and neglect. This book explains how we've come to understand the formation, function and failure of the commons and uses examples to show how the commons touch our lives in so many ways."
