Abstract: "This paper describes and presents an ideal typical model approach which has proved useful in understanding a complex material for the development of fisheries communities within Norway. "The approach is inspired by two different sets of sociological models: a) a real-type model approach drawn from empirical research and historical cases (an adaptation of Max Weber's concept of 'ideal types') and b) a stage-development model inspired by the Marxian/Hegelian mode of analysis which links the particular real-type models to the modernization of Norwegian society as a whole. "The paper concludes with reflections on the relationship between the approach taken here and game theoretical approaches and the advantages that the real-type/stage development approach seems to offer for policy making and practical work."
