Abstract: "The 21st century is opening on the specter of worldwide environmental disaster caused by human beings. Stocks of fish, forests, grasslands, agricultural land, wildlife, air quality and water quality have all been seriously degraded either by overexploitation, or pollution or a combination of the two. Marine fisheries are in particularly poor condition. According to FAO analysis 'sixty nine percent of the fish stocks in the world are exploited at a level at or beyond the level corresponding to MSY [Maximum Sustainable Yield]'."
