Abstract: "Research on forest governance has intensified in the past decades with evidence that efforts to mitigate deforestation and encourage sustainable management have had mixed results. This paper considers the progress that has been made in understanding the range of variation in forest governance and management experiences. It synthesizes findings of recent interdisciplinary research efforts, with particular emphasis on work carried out by the Center for the Study of Institutions, Population, and Environmental Change at Indiana University. By identifying areas of progress, interesting results, and enduring conundrums, the discussion will point to policy implications and priorities for research."
