Abstract: "The adverse long-term effects of climate change are already felt in many areas, like agriculture and food security, biodiversity and ecosystems, human settlements and migration patterns, water resources, human health, and energy among others. In many of these contexts, women are more vulnerable to the effects of climate change than men as they bear more responsibilities generally in a family as food producers and providers and also as guardians of health and care givers. Four areas have been identified as critical building blocks in response to climate change: mitigation, adaptation, technology transfer and financing. The first two blocks are linked to manifestations of climate change whereas the latter two are the areas of taking up proactive measures. Governments should not only carry out systematic gender analysis, collecting and utilizing sex-disaggregated data, establishing gender-sensitive benchmarks and indicators, and developing practical tools to support gender friendly initiatives, but also involve women at the policy making level of gender budgeting as part of the proactive measures."
