Abstract: "Like many of the world's less developed countries, India is experiencing rapid deterioration of its natural environment. It appears that the pressures of rapid industrialization, agricultural modernization and burgeoning population are currently combining in many less developed regions, including India, to damage the natural environment so severely that its continued carrying capacity is in jeopardy. During the last twenty years, the Indian government has pledged to protect its environment and stop the depletion of its natural resource base."
