Abstract: "This article considers the special challenges of managing upland protected areas. The World Conservation Union (IUCN) designation of 'protected area' has been given to many sites and landscapes throughout the world and over 25 percent of these are in mountain areas. Thorsell (1997), using data from the World Conservation Monitoring Centre (WCMC), claims that there are 473 sites in 65 countries totalling over 264 million ha, although at least 36 percent of this area lies in the Greenland National Park."
