"Boreal and temperate forests are endowed with a variety of non-wood forest products (NWFPs). In many countries most. it not all, of these products may be collected by virtually anyone, and free of charge. While a great deal of the NWFPs harvested are used for personal consumption, a significant proportion is destined to markets (both domestic and export). Nevertheless, the figures presented by experts at a recent meeting on the sustainable development of NWFPs in boreal and cold temperate forests suggest that only a small fraction of some of these goods (e.g. mushrooms, berries) is actually harvested. In this article, barriers to the commercialization of such products are identified and some examples of measures and conditions that stimulate the use of non-wood forest resources are discussed." |
