Abstract

"Irrigation development in India continues to be given a high priority, with full irrigation potential- estimated at about 58 million hectares in 1979-80. This amounts to about 51 percent of the total area of 113.5 million hectares that could be irrigated. Total investment in irrigation from the beginning of the planning era in 1951 to 1978 amounted to approximately 93 billion rupees on major, medium and minor projects. Minor irrigation has contributed over half of the growth in total irrigation potential."
