Conflict Over the Contemporary Fate of Common Lands in Japan

Abstract

"This paper describes the legal evolution of the commons and then summarizes the iriaiken conflicts of the past century and attempts to analyze their causes, in hope of contributing eventually to an appropriate extrapolation of lessons from Japan and an understanding of the relationships between property rights, conflict, and environmental outcomes."
