dc.description.abstract"This paper aims to serve as an introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to scholars of common property resources. GIS is a relatively new computer technology. Its first applications were in the late 1950's in Canada and with advances in personal computer technology is now available to anyone with interests in research issues that have spatial characteristics. "The first part of the paper will briefly deal with GIS itself and will be followed by a discussion of possible uses and application of GIS in common property research. The last part of the paper will deal with applications to the study of two farmer-managed irrigation systems in Nepal, Kanchi Kulo in Argali and Thulo Kulo in Chherlung, in Nepal's Palpa district."en_US
