Abstract
"This dissertation takes as its primary concern the privatization of communal land that occurred in one community in Samburu district called Siambu. The conflict over land tenure that engulfed the Siambu community for almost a decade provides an excellent example of the dynamics of institutional change. The shift from communal to private property struck at the heart of pastoral livestock production, which requires access to large tracts of range land. It pitted a group of younger, educated men who sought private land ownership against the 'traditional' elders of the area who defended the status quo."
