Common Property Resources in South Africa's Less Developed Areas: Sustainable Development Issues

Abstract

"The likelihood that closing the commons in South Africa's less developed rural areas will in fact 'open the tragedy' is examined in the context of available natural resources, use risks, and politics. Particular attention is directed towards property rights issues and emerging democratic institutions, as well as to the construction of realistic property values. Equity and sustainability in resource management are explored in relation to institutional development imperatives and the formulation of appropriate management strategies."
