Abstract
"Degradation of India's land mass has been continuing for the last several decades because of deforestation and inappropriate land use. Removal of trees on a vast scale, both from forest and non-forest areas has increased soil erosion, upset water regimes, and reduced the supply of fuelwood, fodder, and small timber on which the vast majority of India's rural population has been dependent for centuries. Extension of cultivation on marginal lands has further exacerbated the ecological crisis, resulting in greater frequency of droughts and floods, depletion of soil and shortage of drinking water in semi-arid areas. According to one estimate, 1-2% of currently productive lands may be deteriorating into wastelands status annually."
