Abstract: "Increasingly, archaeologists are building museums, promoting tourism activities and underwriting other projects to improve the economic conditions and life-chances of the people who live in the communities in which they work. Frequently, archaeologists perceive an ethical obligation and even a practical necessity to identify ways for local communities to benefit economically from the heritage resources at their doorsteps. Sustaining these projects for many years has proven difficult, however. This paper explores the challenges for archaeologists contemplating community economic development projects by focusing on one notably successful community venture associated with the Inca temple site in Raqchi, Peru. The particular emphasis of the paper is on the organization and governance of community groups."
