dc.description.abstract "While issues of 'race,' racism, and discrimination are being taken more seriously than ever before, when it comes to discrimination, both scholars and other Peruvians continue to struggle to understand the relative importance of 'race,' ethnicity, culture, and socio-economic status in everyday discrimination in Peru. This is not surprising considering the complexity of the issues. First, most Peruvians do not have strong 'racial' or even ethnic identities. In addition, 'race' and ethnicity are not always identical. Furthermore, cultural characteristics and class overlap substantially but not always. "The current study endeavors to shed light on some of these issues by exploring Peruvian young peoples' ideas about 'race' and their perceptions of racism and discrimination in Peru as well as in their own lives. The research instrument was a 57 question survey administered to 320 high school and college students in eight educational institutions in Lima, chosen for their contrasting student populations." en_US
