Abstract: "This paper is based on a case study of a coastal village in Luzon, Philippines. It describes the participatory appraisal and planning methods used in developing a village plan for the management of its coastal resources. The participatory approach enabled the villagers to have a say in what they want for themselves, develop their latent capacity to analyze their needs and concerns, and evolve their own plans. The specific methods and techniques used in the preparatory, appraisal, and planning phases of the process are described. These are participatory mapping, transect boat rides, temporal diagrams, semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, workshops, consultations and village assemblies. As assessment of the potential and limitations of participatory appraisal and planning for community based management of coastal resource comprises the final part of the paper."
