dc.description.abstract "This paper reviews the role of aquaculture research in Nigeria. The achievements and limitations of research in aquaculture development are discussed. It identifies strategic prioritization of research objectives in three phases namely; the short term, medium term and long term to properly foster real growth in the aquaculture sector with the dawn of privatization in the country. Ex post assessments are also fundamental in evaluating the viability and effectiveness of past research activities. Participatory approach in research prioritization and process, increased private funding of research and extension, programmes of intervention by the government are required to maximize the untapped potentials in aquaculture for its rapid transformation to a full-fledged economically viable sector. Thus, profitable, sustainable ecological aquaculture and ‘water smart’ culture systems consistent with different geographical zones of the country must be designed with potentials for sequestration of anthropogenic carbon and nutrients. Adoption of Guidelines on Best Management and Practices in Aquaculture Schemes is a necessity. Above all is the question of an enabling institutional framework, autonomy and pragmatic sector - specific policies without which nothing can be realistically achieved." en_US
