Abstract: "In India, groundwater is a potential resource for human and livestock consumption, industrial requirements and mainly for irrigation. In spite of the abundance of this resource, it has not been possible to ensure its sustainable development and equitable distribution. One of the major factors responsible for this state of affairs has been the physical distribution of the resource itself. Due to uneven distribution of the resource, in certain areas of the country, excessive withdrawal is causing depletion of the water table, whereas in others there is difficulty in drainage and fear of saline intrusion."
